april 2009 breakfast
at this month's waco social media breakfast,Jay Ehret, talked about how to choose a social medial channel for business. we had a great turnout with 26 people there. here are my notes from jay's very informative presentation: the cluetrain manefesto is the "old testatment" of social media discussing the age of conversations and how markets are conversations. groundswell is the "new testament" of social media what is social media?
- wikipedia defines social media as: information content
created by people using highly accessible and scalable publishing
technologies. At its most basic sense, social media is a shift in how
people discover, read and share news, information and content. It's a
fusion of sociology and technology, transforming monologue (one to
many) into dialog (many to many) and is the democratization of
information, transforming people from content readers into publishers.
Social media has become extremely popular because it allows people to
connect in the online world to form relationships for personal and
business. Businesses also refer to social media as user-generated content (UGC) or consumer-generated media (CGM).
- the main thing to remember is that you can not control the conversation in social media
because
social media is low cost to free, many companies are tempted to "do it
all to make sure we are doing the right thing" but, there is a time
cost involved to do social media correctly. once you choose a social
media channel you are now engaged with that channel.so, how do you choose a social media channel? choose it based on your challenge
